Digital Hearing Aid: A Panacea for Hearing Impaired Person
Article by Hearing Central
In the United States, 1 in every 10 persons has developed hearing problem either gradually or all of a sudden. This phenomenon persuades audiologists to accept as a mere option to treat hearing loss. Started from analog machines, hearing have made significant improvement in terms of generating as well as processing sound. Of late, the market is flooded with digital aids, which transform sound waves to digital signals. Integrated with enhanced processing and specifications, a hearing aid has mainly come in two different models – behind-the-ear (BTE) and completely-in-the-canal (CIC). In fact, both these models have been well received by audiologists and consumers.
Advantages of digital over analog:While talking about amplifying the sound, digital aids have outclassed analog counterparts altogether. The latter picks up sound waves through a microphone and then transforms these waves into electrical signals. But during the amplification of sound, the analog device fails to enfeeble the background noise, thereby making it difficult for the wearer to recognize speech properly. On the other hand, the digital aid amplifies the speech, while obstructing the background noise. Secondly, the adjustment of sound is predominantly omitted from analog devices. But hearing are developed keeping in mind different hearing problems as well as varied noise environments.
Features of digital aids:Integrated with software algorithms to transform sound in to digital code by using mathematical calculations. Unlike analog device, the digital hearing aid is featured with wireless connectivity to access wireless signals.Digital hearing aids are capable of separating background noise from original speech.
Today, online vendors are mushrooming in the market with advanced and elegant digital hearing aids, which are customized to specific hearing problems for consumers and compatible to different noise environments. These vendors collect products from leading manufacturers and sell them at very competitive prices. All you need to do is to visit a leading hearing aids store and say adieu to hearing loss.

Question by janeisadoe: What is the best kind of hearing aid that isn’t terribly expensive?
I do have a hearing loss. I have looked at the digital (very expensive) and the amplifier that goes in your ear. I don’t have any experience, and would like to hear from those who have tried different kinds to find out what is the best.

It depends what you call expensive. Generally quality hearing aids are at least $ 3,000 for a pair but can be as much as $ 9,000. Remember that not all digital hearing aids are the same, they vary from brand to brand and also even within brands there are dozens of different kinds that all fall into the category of digital.
I have fitted hundreds of patients over the past 12 years. For the first six years I worked for the two largest independent hearing aid companies in the UK (I now work in the US). When there I got to fit most of the major brands and see the results. My favorite brand is Starkey/Audibel. They appear to last a long time, have very low distortion and are a huge all American company that only make hearing aids. They fitted four US presidents.
When you go and see a hearing instrument specialist you should insist on a free trial of at least 30 days, you should be concerned if (s)he doesn’t arrange for follow up appointments or lets you wear the aids home the first time. You should also be concerned if they are not equipped to fit you with a real digital hearing aid system right there on the day of the test so you can listen to it before buying. The real system will probably have to be special ordered to fit your ear, but a good dispenser should be able to rig up a real hearing aid system with disposable ear pieces so you can at least experience a real hearing aid system.
The bottom line is that if you have a real hearing loss the best way to help yourself is to bite the bullet and spend the money on a decent system. I have never yet met a patient who got any satisfaction from the kind of amplifiers that you can buy online. Most hearing loss varies from one frequency to another, so an amplifier will not correct that. It would be like buying a magnifying glass instead of a set of prescription glasses.

Question by Me1984: I have a question about the Loud N Clear Sound Amplifier for hearing purposes?
The other day I saw an infomercial for a product that amplifies sounds, and you can hear a conversation from across the street. Does the Loud N Clear sound Amplifier actually work? If I am listening to one person, will it pick up well, or will I get distracted by other voices and sounds? I’m 24 and have difficulty hearing sometimes, so would this be a good alternative to a hearing aid? If there are any other things similar to this that are cheaper than hearing aids, so I can be able to hear better, please give me some advice.
Best answer:
Answer by Kendra O
Amplifiers like those do not selectively pick up noises. The amplification of distant vibrations will be amplified in proportion to the near, loud noises. This can further damage your hearing, and is a terrible idea as an alternative for a hearing aid. They are meant to be used in lectures or classes, when there is a single voice needing amplification, not when there will be multiple voices around you.
