Suzuki Uk Plays Its Part In Reducing Waste To Landfill Sites
As people become more educated on environmental issues and the carbon foot print initiative, businesses are also conscious of their green credentials and want to play their part to help lower harmful CO2 levels. One of these companies is Suzuki UK based in Milton Keynes.
In 2008 Suzuki headquarters in Milton Keynes sent more than 470 tonnes of waste to landfill, this prompted the firm to come up with a strategy to help increase its environmental performance and lower its carbon footprint. A new waste management company was bought in and new processes put in place.
With the strategies in place the company reduced its landfill waste by 91% with only 23 tonnes heading to landfill sites in 2009 but, the company was not happy with that. The Suzuki Milton Keynes facility Manager explained “We wanted to continue to improve our performance and we identified a grey area – general office waste from the bins under our desks. This is now being sent to a facility where it is mechanically sorted and all the recyclable materials are removed. What is left is sent to a waste-to-energy site where it is processed and used to help generate power for the local community; we now have zero waste to landfill.”
Recycling waste and using it to generate power is all good but Suzuki wants to lower the amount of waste they produce in the first place. As a company they looked at ways they can re-use materials within the building and within the business, for instance all cardboard waste from the factory is now sent to the warehouse where it is shredded and used for packaging. Suzuki hopes its environmental initiatives will be adopted by all its franchises, including Suzuki Worthing.
